Maria Theresa (1717-1780) was Archduchess of Austria and ruler of the Austrian Habsburg dominions from 1740 to 1780. She succeeded her father, Emperor Charles VI, by the Pragmatic Sanction, but was challenged by neighboring powers in the War of the Austrian Succession (1741-1748), losing Silesia to Prussia but securing the imperial title for her husband, Francis I. Her rule was generally benign and moderately reformist. After the death of Francis (1765) she ruled jointly with her son, Emperor Joseph II. (From Encyclopedia of World History.)
