The Munster (cathedral) of Bonn is situated in the central part of the city. It is built of gray stone in Romanesque and Transitional styles (12th and 13th centuries). It is surmounted by five towers, of which the central is a landmark in the Rhine valley. Bonn was the capital of the German Federal Republic and Beethoven's birthplace. Its finest building is the famous old university founded in 1786 by the archbishop elector Maximilian.
