According to traditional Christian theology the
Assumption is the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into heaven after her
death. The reverse scene depicts Mary being crowned by the Trinity, the
Christian doctrine of the union of three divine figures: the Father (God),
the Son (Jesus of Nazareth) and the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit; the Third of
the Christian Trinity).
