Cesare Ignazio d'Este (1674-1713) was a member of the Este family, one of the oldest of the former reigning houses of Italy. The Este family is in all probability of Lombard origin and descended from the princes who governed in Tuscany in Carolingion times. Their major base of power was in Modena, and for two centuries this dynasty had been among the most important families in Italy, and its court was perhaps the most splendid in Europe.
