Oaxaca de Juarez is the capital of the state of Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico. A beautiful colonial city, Oaxaca is notable for its green onyx buildings, especially the 16th century cathedral, its important Indian market and its handicraft industries. It is built on the site of an Aztec garrison post founded in 1486. In pre-Columbian times the state was inhabited by many Indian groups, chief of whom were the kingdoms of the Zapotecos and Mixtecos, whose remains are found at Mitla and Monte Alban and whose descendants form the majority of the population. Benito Juarez, after whom the state is named, and Porfirio Diaz were born in Oaxaca. The medal commemorates the College of Santa Cruz in Oaxaca.
