ADALBERT

ST. URBAIN, Ferdinand de: Lorraine, ca. 1720, Bronze, 47 mm
Obv: A hand holding an open bible on a rectangular block. The bible is inscribed:  BIBLIA SACRA Legend around:  INCONVVLSA. FIDES.
Rev: Legend: ADALBERTVS ALSATIAE METARVM SARRAGOVIAE COMES. EBERHARDI ALSATIAE COMITIS FILIVS. PIIS OPERIBVS INCLITVS IN ABBATIA BOSONISVILLAE QVAM VIVENS FONDAVERAT TVMVLATVR CVM VXORE IVDITHA COMITISSA LVXEMBVRG ANNO MXXXIV.

Adalbert (1000-1048), the son of Gerard de Bouzonville (Gerhard II), Count of Metz, and Gisela, was the Duke of Upper Lorraine from 1047 to his death in 1048. Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor, invested Adalbert with Lorraine in 1047 after confiscating it from Godfrey III.
