Thierry II (Theodoric II), called the Valiant, was the duke of Lorraine from 1070 to his death in 1115. He was the son and successor of Gerard (Gerhard) and Hedwige de Namur.

Gertrude of Flanders (1080-1117) was the daughter of Robert I Count of Flanders and Artois. Her first marriage was to Henrich III Count of Louvain with whom she bore four daughters. Her second marriage was to duke Thierry II of Lorraine, the subject of this medal.
